Traffic Control in France

You will find camera's like this all allong highway and other roads in France.
They cover both directions of the road or multiple highwaylanes. They can flash in both directions, from behind and from the front, depending on the position of the camerahouse.
Camera's are located within about a 1000 meter of the warning sign. As long as the sign is there, soon there is a speed camera, be aware of that.

If you see this sign

Not all images are working...

So, to summarize: Just brake when you see a warning sign :)

When you drive max 150, fine is only 45 euro (at peage)...

Just follow a local car (one of the advantages of French license plates) and you know exactly which speed cameras are active. :kniktja:

As long as I see people in Holland who get caught by speed cameras who are there for YEARS, I am not following this advice...
In unknown areas I am not going to drive way too fast; just because a holiday is by itself expensive enough.

It was meant in general; if you get caught e.g. in Switzerland with vmax+15 it's the same as vmax+49 in France...

At least the French give a clear warning sign so you can anticipate. Last week I heard most of the speed cameras in France are infrared so you don't see a flash.

You'd better be careful though, at the entrance of toll plaza's. The gendarmerie likes to point laser guns at approaching cars, and when you're caught, they'll pick you out after passing the toll booth. Especially this weekend all traffic police is on roll call.

Found on the huge internet an overview on speeding tickets in France. Earlier in this topic was said the fine for max + < 20 kmh is 45 euro's but it starts with 68 (etc)!

http://english.controleradar.org/speeding-fines.php

The best is to confirm the maximums
Speeding fines in France

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Foreigner or not, speeding is punishable by law (usual speed limits). Having a french driving licence or not, driving a vehicle with french driving plates or not, will make a difference in the outcome:
- You are arrested by the police or gendarmerie for moderate speeding. Fine to be paid on the spot. Points lost if french driving licence.
- You are arrested by the police or gendarmerie for inmoderate speeding (in excess of 50km/h). Fine to be paid, licence confiscated, vehicle might be impounded.
- You are caught speeding by a speed camera but not arrested with a foreign registered car. You are not likely to ever have to pay the fine, except if you are from Luxembourg. For now. Check here for more.

Speeding by less than 20 km/h (12 mph)

Fine (0) : 68 euros
License points loss : 1 point

License suspension : none
if however the speed limit is lower than 50 km/h (31 mph)

Fine (1) : 135 euros
License points loss : 1 point
License suspension : none

Speeding between 20 km/h and 30 km/h (12 mph to 19 mph)

Fine (1) : 135 euros
License points loss: 2 points
License suspension (2) : none

Speeding between 30 km/h and 40 km/h (19 mph to 25 mph)

Fine (1) : 135 euros
License points loss: 3 points
License suspension (2) : 3 years

Speeding between 40 km/h and 50 km/h (25 mph to 31 mph)

Fine (1) : 135 euros
License points loss: 4 points
License suspension (2) : 3 years

Speeding by more than 50 km/h (31 mph)

Fine (2) : 1500 euros
License points loss: 6 points
License suspension (2) : 3 years

Second offence speeding by more than 50 km/h (31 mph)

Jail (2) : 3 months
Fine (2) : 3750 euros
License points loss: 6 points
License suspension (2) : 3 years

(0) The fine is 68 euros, however if paid in less than 15 days it is 45 euros, and if paid in more than 45 days it is 180 euros. The maximum possible being 450 euros (if it goes into trial).
(1) The fine is 135 euros, however if paid in less than 15 days it is 90 euros, and if paid in more than 45 days it is 375 euros. The maximum possible being 750 euros (if it goes into trial).
(2) maximum.

That's good to know. However, the speeding tickets issued by these camera's never arrive in Holland because there isn't an agreement to do so between The Netherlands and France.
